Scott’s determination was evident from a young age. Despite facing a rare childhood illness that stunted his growth, he pursued his love for figure skating and achieved remarkable success. However, life dealt him a devastating blow in 1977 when his mother passed away from breast cancer. This loss deeply impacted Scott, but it also planted the seeds of his lifelong commitment to cancer awareness and advocacy.

Conquering Testicular Cancer
In 1997, Scott faced another formidable challenge: a diagnosis of testicular cancer. The news shocked the skating world, but Scott approached his treatment with the same tenacity he had shown on the ice. With surgery and chemotherapy, he not only beat the disease but also became an inspiration to countless others battling cancer.
The First Brain Tumor Diagnosis
In 2004, Scott’s health journey took another unexpected turn. Doctors discovered a brain tumor in his pituitary gland. Though benign, the tumor required surgery, and the process was grueling. In 2010, the tumor recurred, leading to a second operation. Complications arose, including nine additional surgeries after a nicked artery. Yet, Scott’s resilience never wavered. He focused on recovery and regaining strength, determined to continue living a fulfilling life.

A Third Diagnosis and a Bold Decision
In 2016, the tumor resurfaced for the third time. By then, Scott had grown weary of the invasive treatments and their risks. When presented with the option of another surgery, he decided against it. Instead, he chose to focus on building his strength and allowing his body to heal naturally. Remarkably, this approach yielded positive results: follow-up scans showed that the tumor had not only stopped growing but had shrunk by 45%.
A Sobering Update
Despite these hopeful developments, subsequent scans revealed new growth in the tumor. True to form, Scott remains optimistic. Though he has chosen not to pursue immediate treatment, he keeps the option of targeted radiation therapy in mind. For now, he is embracing life, cherishing every moment, and continuing to inspire others with his courage.
“All I felt was just, don’t worry about this. Just go home and get strong,” Scott said, reflecting on his decision.
Family and Gratitude
Celebrating his 66th birthday this year, Scott is deeply grateful for the unexpected blessings in his life. Married with four children, he often marvels at how far he’s come. “I never would’ve thought to dream any of it,” he shared, expressing profound gratitude for his family and the opportunities he’s had to give back to the world of skating and cancer research.
Giving Back: The Scott Hamilton CARES Foundation
Scott’s personal experiences with cancer have fueled his passion for advocacy. He founded the Scott Hamilton CARES Foundation, which raises funds for innovative cancer research. Through events like the annual Scott Hamilton and Friends ice show in Nashville, the foundation has made a significant impact, supporting groundbreaking treatments and providing hope to countless families affected by cancer.
“As long as there is cancer in the world, I’ll be doing something in that space,” Scott declared during a recent interview.

Looking back on his journey, Scott’s perspective is nothing short of inspiring. He views his struggles not as setbacks but as opportunities to grow and make a difference. His story reminds us that resilience isn’t about avoiding hardship—it’s about facing it head-on with grace and determination.
