From Flames to Forever: Riona’s Inspiring Journey to a Loving Home
After enduring unimaginable cruelty, Riona's resilience leads her to a loving forever home
It’s hard to imagine how cruel humans can be, yet stories like Riona’s remind us of the resilience animals can show in the face of terrible suffering. Last year, a pitbull mix named Riona was horribly set on fire in a shocking act of animal cruelty. But now, after a long journey of recovery, Riona is finally heading to her new forever home—a place where she’ll find the love and care she deserves.
In June of last year, people in Nutbush, Tennessee, witnessed an unthinkable scene: Riona, her body engulfed in flames, running desperately down the street. The smell of gasoline lingered in the air, a clear sign that this horrific act was intentional. Videos shared on social media captured Riona’s tragic ordeal, sparking outrage and a flood of support from animal lovers worldwide. Soon, the hashtag #justice4riona was trending, as people demanded accountability for this innocent dog.

Riona’s immediate condition was dire. The flames had burned off one of her ears, and she had suffered severe fourth-degree burns across her body. But, remarkably, her left eye was spared. Tails of Hope Dog Rescue quickly intervened, bringing Riona to Bluff City Veterinary Specialists, where she began receiving around-the-clock care. For months, Riona’s skin needed to be wrapped twice daily to protect her healing wounds, and she underwent multiple skin graft surgeries. Despite her trauma, Riona’s sweet nature shone through—she wagged her tail constantly, winning the hearts of everyone who crossed her path.
“She’s just always wagging her tail,” said Mallory Mclemore of Bluff City Veterinary Specialists. “It makes it even harder to believe that anyone could hurt such a sweet soul.”
Ginger Natoli, founder of Tails of Hope Dog Rescue, helped keep Riona’s supporters updated on her progress, often sharing photos and videos. The rescue community rallied around Riona, and supporters sent in donations and gifts to support her recovery. Over time, as her skin healed and her strength returned, Riona’s joyful spirit remained intact. Despite everything she had endured, she was ready to love and trust again.
While Riona healed, law enforcement took action. Quishon Brown, the man accused of setting Riona on fire, was arrested and charged with aggravated animal cruelty. As Riona continued her journey of recovery, her story helped inspire a new animal cruelty bill in Tennessee, aiming to protect pets from such cruel acts in the future.
Months of steady healing passed, and finally, Tails of Hope shared an incredible update: Riona had found a loving family ready to welcome her with open arms. This new family has experience in the medical field, understanding the care and patience Riona needs as she continues her journey to full health. The family has a large yard, children, and other dogs, giving Riona plenty of space and companionship.
Natoli expressed her excitement about Riona’s new family, saying, “Our goal was to find her a forever home, and that’s exactly what we’ve done. She has children to play with, a big yard, and a family who will understand and nurture her.”
Although Riona’s story has reached a happy chapter, the work of animal rescues like Tails of Hope never stops. On the same day Riona went home, the rescue took in another dog who had been a burn victim. “There is always another in need,” they wrote, reminding supporters that the mission to protect animals from cruelty is ongoing.
